Grab Some Margaritas, It’s a Fiesta!

After a long absence, Ford has brought the Fiesta back to our shores, but don’t think for a minute that it’s anything like what we remember from their 1st attempt. The new Fiesta is chock-full of must-have standard features that are options on cars costing several thousand dollars more. Additionally, the look of the Fiesta is modern, fresh and quite handsome, even more so considering this is an entry level compact. The Fiesta’s European styling really shows, looking like nothing else on the road, with its crisp, elegant proportions. The Fiesta is offered as both a four-door sedan as well as the slightly more expensive five-door hatch. We liked the look of the hatchback over the four-door sedan better. Looking at the car’s profile, you instantly notice how fresh the overall design is as well as how stylish and elegant the 16 inch wheels look, thus, giving the Fiesta a quantum step above the typical, hub-cap equipped, econo-box.

As soon as you enter the roomy cockpit of the Fiesta, you’re greeted with an elegant swooping dashboard, comfortable seats, and really neat ambient lighting, to which you can select the color, depending on the mood. For the media oriented, the Fiesta features the Ford Sync media interphase, which includes a USB and Auxiliary ports conveniently located in the center console. Happy to report, that the standard audio system sounds great.

Most compacts are downright dull to drive, while the Fiesta is unexpectedly not dull at all. The press vehicle we drove for a week, featured a five-speed manual transmission, which, surprise again, is much smoother than what we anticipated. Clutch operation, as well as gear selection is smooth and precise. Yes, going up a bridge in 5th gear, the Fiesta can be a bit sluggish, but this is easily remedied by simply “kicking it up a notch” and shifting into 4th or even 3rd gear. The dashboard features a shift light to remind you to up-shift, thus maximizing its already frugal fuel consumption. Push the Fiesta hard, and you are rewarded with pretty decent performance. The inline four cylinder engine does whine a bit, at higher revs, buts that is merely nit-picking, as this seems to be a characteristic of most 4 cylinder engines. 60-70 MPH cruising is quiet and smooth, giving the feel of a larger, more expensive ride. Feedback from the front disks and rear drum brakes are direct and precise. Steering is comfortable to hold and easy to turn, even during parking maneuvers.

The rear seats are comfortable for two adults or three children, something quite unusual for this size car. The deep well cargo area, accessed through a rear hatch, offers plenty of cargo room, even with the rear seats up. Need to carry golf clubs? Travel bags? A dog? No problem, heck, there is even room for the mother-in-law back there!

Although the Fiesta is considered an entry level compact, we are well impressed with the design, fit, finish, its generous list of standard equipment as well as the overall value. So, why not make every morning’s commute feel like a party! Drive the Ford Fiesta.

2011 Ford Fiesta SES

2011 Ford Fiesta SES

By: Juan G. Robbin
Ford is about to have a Fiesta!

Fords’ new World Class entry level car promises to be a huge hit!

The European flavor and quality is quickly and unmistakably noticeable in Ford’s new 2011 entry level offering. Plans are to use a global small car platform for the Fiesta, with differences being country/market specific changes. This is great news for the U.S. as so many times in the past when I’ve visited Europe and encountered the cool Fords there, you can’t help but wonder why Ford isn’t selling these great vehicles domestically. Now they will be, with the US introduction of the latest Fiesta scheduled to go on sale ummer 2010. Built in Ford’s efficient truck-turned-passenger-car plant in Cuautitlan Mexico, the all new for the US 2011 Fiesta clearly has its eyes set on conquering the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris buyer. Positioning itself in the slot below the Focus, the Fiesta is definitely a compelling choice for those that are looking for a 1st car for their teen-ager or for those empty nesters that want a small, fuel efficient yet fun, stylish and pleasant to drive vehicle.

The body design looks fresh and modern, with crisp character lines, accented by a stylish rear spoiler, elegant tail lights, handsome wheels and a unique front bumper design. After seeing both Fiesta models this writer liked the more aggressive and distinct look of the hatchback version more so than the conservative looking four-door sedan.
The interior design, together with the fit and finish is one of the best in segment and one of the best ever from Ford. There is European styling as well as traditional and optional amenities that US drivers like, such as the superbly useful multi-function SYNC system. One area where Ford paid close attention was the windshield and weather stripping, making the Fiesta noticeably quiet. In fact, it was easy to have a low-tone conversation between my ride and drive partner and I, even at highway speeds. The automatic version has a class leading 40 MPG fuel economy rating, making it a green car as well. Driver and passenger seats look sporty, yet feel delightfully comfortable. Interior switchgear offers a nice tactile feel, especially on the turn signal and wiper stalks. There is full inter-connectivity for digital music files as well as an integrated sound system that presents the information on the high-center mounted display. We noticed the unique, thin, red indicators throughout the dash and instrument cluster, quite European looking as compared to the typical domestic Ford font versions.

During a recent Ford ride and drive press event, we drove the five speed manual hatchback SES from San Francisco to a boutique and picturesque winery close to San Jose. Most of the drive was on small, scenic back roads that, at times, can be a challenge in any car. The Fiesta handled the drive beautifully. Sure, there were moments when we wanted more power, (who doesn’t). It’s not a sports car, nor is it trying to be one. Regardless, we found the cornering ability and braking to be crisp and direct, respectively. Gearbox and throttle have a Euro-quality feel to them. Rear passenger room is typical for this size vehicle, comfortable for two, tight for three. Rear cargo room is good, with split rear fold-down seats for extra cargo space.
Ford’s objectives with the Fiesta are to offer a fuel efficient vehicle that is also stylish, fun to drive and economical to purchase. The all new 2011 Fiesta exceeds all of these goals with ease.
For Ford, there is a new party in town and it’s called the Fiesta.

2009 Ford Flex

2009 Ford Flex

By: Juan G. Robbin

Cool styling, fresh interior and a superb ride ! Ford has gotten its mojo back !
Ford Flex (2009)

With its distinctive and innovative design, the Ford Flex is the hippest crossover on the street today. The road presence and look of the Flex is unmistakable in a world chalk full of similar crossover designs.

Areas and curves of the innovative interior were inspired by the distinctive canister vacuum cleaner designs of the 1940’s and 1950’s that are part of the collection of the Flex chief designer, Mr. Richard Gresens. As luck would have it, Mr. Gresens was pondering how to approach a specific interior curve. He sat back and looked across his studio and instantly noticed the arc of the vacuum cleaners’ canister section and there it was ! The curve he needed.

The driver and front passenger seats are noticeably comfortable. There is a new seat architecture and design that is being introduced in the Flex and will subsequently cascade into upcoming Ford models. Second row seating area is impressive not only in comfort but also in the leg room offered. There is an optional refrigerator in between the second row captain’s chairs that is sure to be a hit with families. Third row seating is comfortable, more so if the optional dual skylights are ordered. The steering wheel feel and feedback are superb, with direct and pleasant lightness. Tactile feel on the materials all over the interior is noticeably improved. Switchgear, controls, buttons and knobs are pleasant to see and use. We had a chance to drive the Ford Flex between New York City and Greenwich Connecticut recently with the optional Nav. package that included the new Microsoft SYNC voice activated and rear back up camera technologies. We came away thoroughly impressed by the way the information is presented in addition to the quality of the display graphics. We loved the SIRIUS Travel Link feature: Giving us weather, real time traffic and fuel price information. The quality of the display is impressive, specially seeing the dynamic weather map feature. The Ford Flex integrates current technology seamlessly, enhancing how we live our lives. Bravo Ford !

One of the distinctive design features of the Flex are the side panel grooves. These grooves give the car a smoother, longer feel to it. We specially liked the integrated front rocker panels that are attached to the door instead of the frame, no more dirty pant cuffs ! There is the dark, mysterious effect the Flex gives off due to its darkened security glass and blackened pillars, this is in addition to the unique roof colors that come in either silver or white hues. There is a fuel door with a twist, no screw-on gas cap. The door itself is the cap, so simply open the fuel door and start pumping the gas.

Driving the Flex through country roads was a treat. Handling feels more like a sedan than a crossover, wind noise is almost non existent even at highway speeds. The interior was quiet enough that conversation was easy regardless of where one sits in the Flex.

Without a doubt, the Ford Flex is one of the most innovative and interesting vehicles to come out of Detroit in years. If you are looking for a cool, multi-use vehicle or simply want to be noticed as one of the “hip crowd,” then the Ford Flex should be on your short list.

The all new for 2009 Ford Flex, spectacular!

2008 Ford F150 Harley Davidson Edition

2008 Ford F150 Harley Davidson Edition

By: Juan G. Robbin

Mighty fast and mighty strong!
Ford F150 Harley Davidson Edition (2008)
2008 is the last year of the current look for the Ford F150 truck, yet it still looks fresh and modern. Throw in the Harley Davidson package and it looks even more aggressive. There is a love affair with the name Harley Davidson and Ford has taken advantage of this tie in to create a line of distinctive trucks.
The F150 Harley Davidson Edition truck that we drove had the optional Saleen supercharger, giving this F150 incredible response when accelerating. There is a menacing howling supercharger sound when you squeeze on the power reminding you this is no ordinary truck.
Inside there is a special interior that offers several unique touches available only for the HD edition. Special color seat inlays, a serialized plaque with the vehicle’s VIN in the mid dash, special glossy carbon finish on the center dash, HD logos on the seats and center console as well as special two toned seats. Other than the special edition touches, the interior, dash and overall finishes are typical Ford, which is to say, pretty good although starting to get a bit dated specially the way miles, MPG, elapsed time, miles to empty is presented via LED lights on the dash.
Driving the F150 Harley Davidson Edition is a smooth and comfortable affair. Of course, you have the higher up seating position giving the driver an excellent, expansive view of the surroundings as well as the expansive, wide feeling interior giving plenty of space for storage throughout. Rear seat is comfortable, with good leg room and seat cushion softness. Acceleration response is short of breathtaking, braking and handling are as expected on a truck this size. We found that the larger wheel/tire combination gave a slight harsher ride feel but still quite acceptable.
Getting in and out of this type of truck can be a bit uncomfortable, especially for vertically challenged persons. One solution is the optional left and right running boards, as these are a big help for people to be able to get in and out with ease.
If you want a distinctive truck that is fast, comfortable and stands up to any use you may have and don’t mind the high fuel consumption, then the Ford F150 Harley Davidson Edition should be on your short list for consideration.

2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

By: Juan G. Robbin

In the words of the legendary Yogi Berra, “It’s deja vu all over again”
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 (2007)

The American muscle car is alive and well, just one drive in the outrageous Shelby GT500 will convince you.

With its ground effects body work, double hood, roof and trunk lid stripes, special wheels, sports brakes and suspension, this is no regular Mustang. Its 500 supercharged horses are ready to pounce on command. Want to drive the GT500 hard? Hang on, it’s a wild ride fueled by its high power and torque! This special Mustang is a very civilized muscle car under normal driving conditions; Easy to drive and easy to live with, other than the higher fuel consumption and heavy clutch.

Where the Shelby GT500 shines is with its incredible power and superb muscle V8 sound. The steering is direct, brakes are powerful and acceleration response almost instant. Cabin appointments and layout is simple but functional. Rear seats are best used for kids or additional space for items that don’t fit in the small trunk.

We did notice some interesting things due to its legendary designation and special graphics: Everyone notices you! Incredible how many people know this car and want one! We also noticed that due to the long, sloping hood, its difficult to see where the front of the car is when you are pulling up to a parking space. Rear visibility is limited by the small rear side windows, so reverse parking is not much easier. These are things you simply get used to once you’ve had the car for a while.

So, are you ready to ride this steed? Here is the bad news. The Ford Shelby GT500 is in high demand and dealers are asking a premium over MSRP. Patience and a thorough search will get you one with minimum mark up right now.

The Essentials

MSRP $40,930.00 (as tested): $43,765.00
Fuel consumption (observed): 15.5 MPG
Engine: 5.4 liter, supercharged V8, 500 HP

2007 Ford Edge SEL All Wheel Drive

2007 Ford Edge SEL All Wheel Drive

By: Juan G. Robbin

A modern, comfortable and good looking crossover
Ford Edge SEL All Wheel Drive (2007)

A superb mid-size crossover from Ford

Ford is serious in being a major player in the mid-sized crossover segment with its new for 2007 Edge.

As you approach the Edge you can’t help but to notice its bold, louvered front grille and the bright spoke wheels. You also notice an excellent fit and finish on the body panels and seams-definitely a noticeable improvement on Ford’s part.

Entry into the front seats is easy, as the Edge has a larger door opening and sits slightly lower than a typical SUV. Once seated, you are greeted by a large central multi-function display flanked by two large vents. The Air conditioning, sound system and optional DVD based navigation system are all integrated into the touch screen.

We found the ride to be more like a passenger car than an SUV, this will be a nice surprise for those that like soft rides as compared to a more firm, truck like feeling. The 6 cylinder engine was adequate for getting up to speed quickly on the highway, but we did notice that with a full load of people and bags, it did strain a bit. Brakes were linear and effective, but a bit vague under maximum braking. Steering feedback feels similar to a passenger sedan. There is no third row of seats available on the Edge.

It’s interesting to note that in some of the tall SUV style vehicles, the cargo hatch goes up so high that most people that are shorter simply cannot reach the hatch to close it. On the Edge, the rear cargo hatch is easy to open and within easy reach for closing. Additionally; Rear seats fold down 60/40 split.

Likes:

•    Visibility, comfort, crisp, contemporary styling
•    Good fit and finish.
•    Noticeable road presence
•    Open, bright feeling of the panoramic moon roof (optional)

Dislikes:

•    Air conditioning vent design: The two middle vents angle directly at the driver and passenger. Because of this angle, you have limited adjustability of the direction of the air flow in case either occupant does not want the air blowing directly on their face.
•    The gear selector lever: The movement and selection of the gear felt vague and sloppy.

The Essentials

MSRP:    $30,720.00 MSRP (as tested): $36,805.00
Fuel Economy (observed): 17.1 MPG
Engine: V6, 3.5 liter, 265 HP
Popular options: 18” chrome finish wheels, Panoramic vista moon roof, Sirius Sat. radio, DVD navigation system.
