2010 GMC Sierra Hybrid 2WD Crew-Cab
By: Juan G. RobbinNo need to be fuelish any longer!
Light-duty pickups are no longer just known as non-descript work trucks or a rancher’s vehicle. They have morphed into a multipurpose, family conveyance that seems to have unlimited uses for the current generation of owners. Even with all of this versatility, one of the shortfalls for most pickup trucks is their high fuel consumption. With the GM two-mode continuous electric ratio hybrid system, fuel economy is greatly improved, without giving up any of the power or performance.
The Sierra’s body style has been recently refreshed, now sporting a brawny, “I mean business” look with its angular shapes and wide grille, this is a truck that looks good driving it on a farm or through the valet line in a fu-fu restaurant.
The crew cab version of the Sierra is perfectly sized, as it is able to comfortably fit into any parking space, a drive thru lane and or a covered parking area. Front seats are individual fabric upholstered seats that are remarkably comfortable. Of course, visibility from the front is superb, as you are high enough to see over most of the surrounding vehicles’ rooftops ahead of you. Rear seating is quite comfortable even though rear seatbacks do sit fairly erect. Fit and finish are remarkably improved. Leading this noticeable improvement is the better looking material and higher quality that GM is using, not only for its dash, but also the door and side panels of the Sierra.
The patented two-mode hybrid system is smooth and compliant, regardless of the driving style. One nice feature is letting the driver accelerate past 20 MPH under certain battery charge level conditions, this all depends how smooth the driver is with the throttle. Imagine a pick up truck this size going down the neighborhood road without any engine noise. Look Ma! It’s a giant golf cart! There is an auto start-stop feature that is noticeable only because you feel a slight shudder as the engine starts up. Additionally, there is a fuel enhancing feature of cylinder disabling, squeezing even more out of a gallon of fuel. The large bank of batteries, for the two-mode hybrid system, are housed under the rear bench seat. Acceleration and torque is similar or better than in the standard, gasoline only sibling; offering smooth shifts and quick response from the transmission. We also noted the excellent turning radius, making the GMC Sierra a breeze to drive in an urban setting.
The hybrid option is about $3,500.00 more than the standard, similar optioned, crew-cab Sierra, but with a nice $2,200.00 Uncle Sam tax credit for the hybrid purchase, the difference is almost unnoticeable, yet offering a tremendous upside in fuel economy.
The 2010 GMC Sierra Hybrid 2 WD Crew-Cab, a superb light duty pick-up truck, offering style, comfort, and excellent fuel economy, while giving up nothing in return.
