Civilized, sporty and fun to drive
Porsche Cayman S (2009)

When the Porsche Cayman was introduced, it was an instant hit with the Porsche faithful worldwide. Even though the Cayman has remarkable handling, it is a bit skinny in power. The famous Stuttgart factory listened to its faithful and the Cayman S was introduced.

Fast forward to 2009 and Porsche has continued refining the Cayman family. One of the highlights for 2009 is the addition of Porsche’s version of the double clutch transmission in Porsche speak: Doppel-Kupplungsgetriebe – or PDK as it is most commonly known. This new transmission replaces the tiptronic 5 speed offered previously. Additionally, there is an increase of 25 horsepower, which is now up to 320 quick pulsing horses on tap. Shifting for the PDK system is from a disappointing and at times, confusing double fore-aft slide switch on both sides of the steering wheel. This is fine for casual drivers, but those who want to be more sporty will definitely miss the more commonly used set up of left click for up-shifts and right click for down-shifts architecture. Regardless, the PDK worked flawlessly both in the auto as well as the manual modes.

Inside the Cayman S, one is greeted with a number of familiar classic Porsche signature design elements. The start key switch is on the left side, paying homage to the legendary Le Mans racing days. The tachometer placement is prominently featured at the center of the dash flanked by several smaller orbs used for a complete set of gauges and instruments. The seats are typical Porsche seats, comfortable and tight in all the right places. The cabin is draped in quality materials, noticeably better than previous models. Center dash has space for the optional multi-function display with navigation functions. Our test vehicle had the upgraded sound system which we found to be better than previous models but, still not very intuitive. In fact, we had to consult the owners’ manual in order to figure out how to program the preset buttons for the radio. Storage within the cabin is available, with a shallow center console area as well as door arm rest and glove box areas. Of course, the Cayman and Boxter family of models offer a unique feature, two trunks! The front trunk is deep, while rear trunk, accessible through a hatch back offers a shallow but quite usable space. There is also access to fluids from the rear trunk by popping an elegantly finished cover accessing oil, radiator and washer fluids. Want to use the Cayman S on a weekend getaway for two? Luggage constraints won’t be much of an issue with this excellent set up.

Driving the Cayman S is simply a delight to all of the driver’s senses. The engine sound is subdued yet sporty when the car is driven normally. Stomp on the accelerator and the center mounted V6 motor unleashes a wail that is like no other in a sports car. Steering feedback is simply magical and surgically precise. Brakes feel direct and powerful yet never over boosted or grabby. The way all of the controls work in harmony is what makes the Cayman S truly a special Porsche.
