Simple Elegance
Lincoln MKX (2009)

Sometimes elegance comes in an understated package. The midsize crossover from Lincoln, called the MKX delivers it. It’s easy to think that the MKX looks familiar! It should, as it shares the same platform and design with the Ford Edge.

Lincoln has always been known for its stately grand sedans. However, with the passage of time people’s tastes and needs have changed and this “Grand Dame” of car companies has had to significantly modify its offerings in order to stay relevant with consumers. The MKX is an elegant, comfortable vehicle that is smaller and more efficient than the ubiquitous Town Car that one associates with the Lincoln brand. Our week with a 2009 MKX was a delight. The slick aerodynamic shape keeps the interior whisper quiet while driving. The front grille is dramatic; covering the entire width of the front fascia with the traditional look of the Lincoln weaved mesh design. The rear lights have a full width appliqué reminiscent of the classic Lincolns of yore. There is an expansive, optional “vista roof” glass moonroof that opens up the interior into an airy and bright passenger area. Seats are covered with supple leather surfaces featuring contrasting piping stitching, making the interior look and feel custom made. Layout and design inside look quite similar to the Edge yet it seems to fit right in with the Lincoln’s understated elegance motif.

Driving the MKX is a nice surprise. Again, its size makes for an agile yet comfortable vehicle, especially in urban surroundings. Steering feels typical for a midsize crossover, that is to say, compliant but not over-boosted. Switchgear and center console design is simple and straight forward, with styling cues dating back to the traditional Lincoln look of the 1960’s by using the rounded square motifs on the instrument gauges. Front seat comfort and adjustments are excellent, fitting even the most discerning of derrieres. Rear seat offers a flat floor giving better comfort for two. Three will fit fine even though the seats have a sculpted design. Trunk/cargo area is large and nicely finished, with easy access and hatch operation.

The MKX has all of the accoutrements one comes to expect in a Lincoln such as ventilated seats, Navigation system and the fabulous SYNC voice activated system. Without a doubt this is one of the most complete and user friendly multi-function displays of any vehicle on the road today. Listen up BMW! There are the optional 20” chrome wheels that really fill the wheel wells perfectly, giving the MKX an aggressive yet elegant touch. Acceleration from the 265 HP V6 is adequate, we wished it had a bit more power, especially for highway passing. Handling is tight and compliant, yet still offering the comfortable, supple ride one expects from Lincoln.

The 2009 Lincoln MKX, simple elegance beautifully packaged into a modern crossover that is right for the times.
