2008 Volkswagen Golf R32

VW has scored a hole-in-one with the Golf R32
VW Golf R32 (2008)
Even though the R32 looks like a Golf, it has a very different feel and character in comparison. With its powerful 250 HP VR6 engine, 4-Motion all wheel drive system and lightning fast 6 speed DSG tiptronic transmission, the R32 is a true delight to drive on any road.
With a planned production run of only 5,000 units, the R32 is destined to become a highly sought after vehicle from day one. The first impression when you see the VW R32 is one of subtle differences to the regular Golf, but make no mistaking the powerful statement in its design. There are bigger wheels and brakes, plus the unique looking dual exhaust tips that are aggressively located mid-rear bumper. Inside you are greeted with superbly finished sports seats and a fat-rimmed leather wrapped steering wheel with a flat bottom, a-la Formula 1. There are paddle shifters behind the steering wheel with the gear selection shown in the center instrument dash. Trip data, elapsed time, MPG, distance and direction information is presented in red within the multi-function information screen. This is nestled between the tachometer and speedometer in the dash. We found that red takes a bit to get used to, as most people react to this color as a warning, not general information.
The fit and finish of the R32 is what you would expect of a German automobile, that is to say, above par. The feel of the switchgear as well as the appointments won’t disappoint even the most seasoned car aficionado. The R32 we drove came with the optional navigation system that proved its weight in gold several times during our week with the R32. Each manufacturer’s navigation system is slightly different and it does take a while to get comfortable with each one, but after a bit of fiddling we got it to give us the desired directions to the various destinations we needed. We did find an unusual feature, the knob used to control the map distance range seems to operate backwards. It’s intuitive that counter-clockwise is smaller and clockwise is larger, on the R32 it is the opposite. Additionally, we liked the button on the top left of the screen that lets you change the screen resolution from night to day without having to delve into the set up menu.
Driving the R32 is an enthusiast’s delight. The exhaust tone and loudness is just right, so is the feel and feedback of the steering and throttle. Brakes are excellent, giving strong and direct response to any input. Even at maximum braking there is little or no fade. We loved the linear power the R32 has across the RPM band. Need to accelerate during a merge on the expressway on ramp? No sweat, just squeeze on the power and the R32 effortlessly accelerates to a safe merge speed. Need to gingerly go up a steep driveway or incline at crawling speed? Simply add a bit of throttle and you are rewarded with smooth, comfortable power inputs and delivery. We find that some cars lend themselves to making the driver look good during all driving situations, the R32 is one of those cars. Bravo Volkswagen !
