An All-Wheel-Drive WOW!
Subaru Impreza WRX STi (2008)
The highly anticipated total redesign of the new STi is fresh and even more capable than its replacement. With its nimble 305 turbocharged horsepower and rally derived suspension set up, this is a car that is world-class.
The biggest change to the body architecture is the changeover from a sedan to a sports-wagon set up. Critics of the previous generation WRX lamented how much it looked like a dull, econo-box sedan. The new-for-2008 WRX STi has both a bold distinctive stance and look that is current and exciting. Wide fender bulges, large mid-hood air intake, special wheels, plus two double exhaust tips giving a satisfying sound every time you accelerate. Brakes are strong yet feel as if they lack feedback. Steering felt over-boosted and at times vague. These are nitpicking items that hardly detract from its spectacular legendary handling and street performance capability. There is a center console rotary switch that lets you adjust the suspension and performance capability, giving the driver precise input on the amount of feedback and response. Feel maximum performance and way-out sporty ? Then go with S # (Sport Sharp) setting. How about a blend of sport and comfort. Then go with the S (Sport). Maybe you feel like mixing in with traffic and getting maximum fuel efficiency ? Then select I (Intelligent) setting, works just fine. A toggle switch in the center console offers various manual settings for the Limited Slip Differential (LSD) giving you precise control of how you want this system to work. Don’t really feel like adjusting it ? Then simply leave it in Auto.
Seats are comfortable, with special suede material and STi logos on the headrests. Fit, finish and materials used in the cabin are very good. Design and layout of the interior is simple, yet efficient and modern. Switches and appointments are just where you expect them to be with a good quality tactile feel. Rear seat is comfortable for two, featuring plenty of headroom and good knee room. Cargo area is convenient and offers a privacy roller cover that keeps valuables out of sight.
After one week and over 500 miles in the new WRX STi, I was hooked. This is a superb car that does everything you ask it to do well. The smooth and effortless acceleration right up to the red line as well as the Mosler-Safe-like precise handling and cornering that is built into every STi. Even the boy-racer wide fenders and hood scoop, this is a superb car for any enthusiast.
The 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi is a superb car that borrows directly from its legendary rally heritage while keeping the design fresh and appealing.
